Beef

We are a former Northumberland Monitor Farm, producing Organic Beef, Lamb & breeding maternal high health status Black Baldies & using innovis & Lleyn genetics.

We buy in pedigree Aberdeen Angus bulls and pedigree Hereford bulls and criss cross the breeding backwards and forward to produce whats known as the “Black Baldy”.

We run a very simple system with our cattle.

We buy in pedigree Aberdeen Angus bulls and pedigree Hereford bulls and criss cross the breeding backwards and forward to produce whats known as the “Black Baldy”.  Crossing the genetics allows us to get the best from both breeds whilst promoting hybrid vigour.  We have Hereford and Angus cattle because they are both native British breeds, they love eating grass and can grow to full weight on grass and forage crops.

We run a spring calving herd and aim to calve everything within a condensed timeframe.  The health, genetics and feed are the three crucial elements in getting the herd right.  We aim to put the bull to the cows for 7 weeks, and to the heifers for 6 weeks.  This ensures that all the calves are born within a tight timeframe.  The benefits of having the calves all the same age include feeding, weaning age, vaccinations and the ability to check their general wellbeing swiftly.  We run a comprehensive vaccination programme in order to best protect the herds health.  Antibiotics are not used on the herd unless there is a medical emergency directed by the vet.

We produce all our own forage on the farm.  Premium heifers are retained as replacements with the rest being sold for meat.  The majority of the cattle go to Dovecote Park to be sold by Waitrose in their Duchy Organic range.
